Just been in an accident? Here’s a checklist covering what to do next.

  • Immediately after the accident, park your vehicle so that it is not obstructing traffic.
  • If your vehicle is not driveable switch off the ignition, turn on the hazard lights, get out if you can and move to a safe location away from the road.
  • Call triple zero (000) if somebody is trapped or injured. Give assistance to those injured if it is safe to do so.
  • Police in all states of Australia are required to attend an accident scene if somebody is injured, traffic is being obstructed, drugs or alcohol appear to be involved or a driver has refused to provide their details. Tasmanian law also requires police to attend accidents in which vehicles are towed.
  • Stay calm and don’t admit fault. Exchange details with the other driver(s) involved. The minimum information you will need is:
    • Registration number of other vehicle
    • Driver’s name
    • Driver’s address
    • Vehicle owner’s name
    • Vehicle owner’s address
  • If your vehicle is unsafe to drive have it towed to the towing operator’s holding yard, your own property or to a repairer you trust. If the tow truck driver tries to pressure you into taking the vehicle to a repairer they recommend you can refuse and choose another towing company.
  • Find a repairer who specialises in your make of vehicle. Call a dealership or your vehicle’s manufacturer and ask for guidance on an appropriate repairer. Remember not to authorise any repairs until you have contacted your insurer.
  • Contact your insurer. Beware of statements such as “we’ll take care of the repairs”. It is important that your vehicle is repaired properly using genuine parts. By not choosing your own repairer your vehicle may be taken to the cheapest possible bidder.
  • Ask your insurer if genuine parts will be used in the repair. Remember, you may have survived this crash because the genuine parts in your vehicle protected you thanks to the way they were designed and tested. If your vehicle is repaired with non-genuine parts, what will happen next time?
